This hillclimb was only held one year in conjunction with Field Trials. It appears to have been a competition between two clubs, the Utah Region of the Sports Car Club of America and the Idaho Falls club The Eastern Idaho Sports Car Club. These events were held in July and August of 1955 in Alpine Wyoming. Alpine is just over the border from Eastern Idaho.
Description of the Hillclimb states that it was held on McNeel Hill, just across from the Buffalo Station Cafe. .
Join the local festivities at the Flying Saddle! Dallas Clinger of the Flying Saddle Lodge was one of the major promoters.
Because of the location and the year, I am guessing that these events were held on dirt or gravel roads.
Besides the Hillclimb, there were Field Trials. Typical Field Trials of the 50s were very popular in Britain. British competition was/is where they navigate their vehicles on steep, often muddy courses. Negotiating tight turns and reversing course are common.
In the US Gymkana could be used as another term for field trials.
It appears that points were accumulated for these events, with the winning club taking home the trophies. “Next years’ event” is mentioned as being scheduled in Alpine, but I haven’t located information on 1956.
There was a nice assortment of typical sports cars of the era: Triumphs, Austin Healeys, Jaguars, MGs, Corvettes, T-Birds with a VW thrown in!
