Sports car hillclimbing first came to Arizona in 1953 with an event outside Phoenix on South Mountain. In 1953 it was a “practice” run for the future – the future just happened to be 14 years later. The streets of Jerome were taken over in 1959-1964. That hillclimb, the “Ghost City” hillclimb would have been a great one to see. Racing right up through the town, on the streets.
