Bucks Lake

Bucks Lake Hillclimb was held one year only, on August 22 & 23, 1987. I was organized by a group of folks called the Honey Lake Hillclimb Association. This same group organized the Honey Lake Hillclimb the prior year. Honey Lake was also a one time only event. This was an NHA event (Northwest Hillclimb Association).

This hill was run on Big Creek Road, a road that cuts off of Bucks Lake Road and is a winter recreation area. The road runs alongside a river in what I would call a canyon for quite a distance. The hill was staged on 1.8 miles of the windiest section with the river and drop-off constantly to the left as you go uphill. Fast sweeping turns made it a challenge.

John Byrne in his Porsche RSR was king of the hill, averaging 67.2 miles an hour for the win. John, along with Larry & Jan Grove and also Peter Kane brought their RSRs from the Bay Area and competed for a few years at Keno, Hoopa, and this hill.

I can’t pinpoint the exact section of the road used, just that I know there was a river along-side for the complete 1.8 miles raced.
